Resources: Books for Empowerment
The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man that can not read them (1). - Mark Twain
It's a good idea to get into the habit of reading in order to fuel our continuous desires to learn. Reading may not be the only nor most effective way to learn, but reading is certainly an easy and convenient way to extract information. Thus we should take advantage of the wide availability of books in order to help us develop.
When you realize how blessed we are to have reading materials at our disposal, you'll appreciate books a little more. Technology is consistently making books more accessible to all. First with the printing press and now with the word processor or computer. In ancient and medieval times, books were only available to royalty, clergy, and at institutions of higher learning. Now, books are widely distributed and can be found in public libraries, bookstores, and in our homes. Where a physical copy of a specific book doesn't exist, we can order one from Amazon.com or even download copies using specialty websites.
The essence of a book is its story or information; the physical form is actually a dynamic idea. Books have been in the form of stone tablets, papyrus, bamboo, modern paper, and now--electronic books (e-books). Thus the physical form makes no difference at all inasmuch as the contents are preserved, valued, and used. Older generations may not understand why paper books are slowly loosing prestige, but the contents continue to persist electronically. Besides, there will probably always be a demand for a physical book because not even the Amazon Kindle (a book reading device) can quite compare to flipping through pages or writing notes in the margins. In addition, people value the environment of libraries and in our opinion books are here to stay. Books last a lifetime, electronic tools do not and our hope is that you learn to value books as much as the world's richest and most successful business leaders:
Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi. - Oprah Winfrey
